Introduction

Something I noticed about spending some time in Valheim is how quickly a game where you’re just trying to survive can turn into something far larger. I could start with cutting a few trees and throwing up a tiny outpost and then… Somehow I end up sailing into the unknown with a partially completed plan and a backpack full of not-very-good supplies.

That’s kind of the point. Valheim doesn’t constantly push you down a set path. Instead, it hands you a world, a handful of tools, and lots of reasons to see what happens next.

What Valheim Is

Valheim is a survival/exploration game based on Norse mythos, procedural world generation, crafting, building, combat, and progression. You play as a Viking warrior who is summoned to the 10th world, a strange realm of woods, mountains, water, hostile mobs, and enormous bosses.

Your world isn’t static. Each seed produces a different map of terrain, biome placement, ocean coastlines, and locations, so exploration is more about forging your own path than discovering a pre-made tour.

Progression is linked directly to discovery and killing major bosses in different biomes. Each biome has an associated boss, and the boss’ defeat opens up a new place to explore and a further level of crafting gear.

Once you start going out to sea, sailing also matters. Boats can cross the ocean, bring you to new locations, help you transfer materials back home, and establish new routes to uncharted territory.

Why You Should Play Valheim

The building system lets you try out your creativity, while combat and exploration give you dangers to stop the world from being a static construction simulator. Throw in sailing, farming, cooking, boss fights, resource gathering, and procedurally generated worlds, and there’s always something else to work on.
